A Mother's Letter to Obama for her Gay Soldier Son

Tuesday

May 18, 2010

President Barack H. Obama
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest
Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President and First Lady Obama,

I have been a mom for over a quarter of a century, but I remember each of my children’s births with such joy. I remember my son’s birth. We had picked a boy’s name and a girl’s name, deciding to wait and see. My labor was easy. As the baby was born, the doctor exclaimed that he was a boy! He was doing so well that we brought him home to meet his big sister that very morning.

From the start our son was easygoing and peaceful. He grew to be curious, mischievous, active and strong. He was skiing as soon as he could walk. Our son was fearless, whether he was skiing, skating, riding a bike, or climbing up a rock face. He excelled in team sports as well as individual sports, several times placing in the top ten in U.S. and World competitions.

As a young adolescent, however, he struggled in school. He didn’t fit in. We assumed it was because he was gifted and bored with the assignments. As he went on to high school, his struggles continued. He dropped out, completing his GED on his own, and moved on to college without a clear direction.

During those difficult times, he would come to me late at night, and we would talk things over. As a mom, I treasured those long conversations, happy I could be there for him, and despite his struggles, very proud of the young man he was becoming. One night, perhaps a decade ago, he wanted to talk. On this night, my son said, “Mom, I’m gay.” I immediately told him that no matter what, I loved him. (Later, when he came out to his dad, his father’s reaction was just the same.)

With this knowledge came a new responsibility to honor his right to be in control of who knew and who didn’t. And so began a new phase of our lives: living in the closet.

Our son pondered what to do with his life. One day he came home and announced he had joined the military. He was flush with excitement, fully aware of the risk he was undertaking, but, at the same time, so determined to serve. He excelled in Basic Training. He trained for his job and enjoyed his work as an enlisted man. He deployed abroad. He grew up in front of our eyes.

The officers above him recognized his drive and his ability, and helped him to get into a military program that sent him back to finish college and then commissioned him as an officer. He is well on his way to becoming a military pilot. Not long from now, he’ll earn his wings.

This baby, this boy, this man makes his Mom so proud. But as I think about his life forced in the closet from this “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” it makes waiting for repeal another day that much harder.

Mom’s have lots of dreams when they have babies. All of you moms know what I am talking about. What if your child had to live a lie; had to remain alone through their best and brightest years? My dream for my son is that the United States of America would wake up and realize that times have changed, that people who happen to be gay or lesbian are really just like the rest of us, with the same aspirations, the same needs, and the same goals.

“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” throws more than just service people into the closet; it throws moms, dads, siblings, grandparents, godparents, friends and loved ones in there as well.

As a mom, my heart breaks for all the gay and lesbian “kids” in the military, and for all the special people in their lives who live with us in the closet.

I dream of actually being able to write to the President, my senators and representatives in the Congress, and actually signing my name, something I can’t do now due to the risk of outing my son.

I dream of the day when my son won’t have to live in fear, even as he works to keep the rest of us from living in fear.

And yes, as a mom, I dream of my son getting married to the man of his dreams. I dream they will have all the rights that my husband and I do. I dream that my son won’t have to wait through his entire military career to find love. We all yearn for love.

Today, even in the closet, I dare to dream.

Signed,

A mother in the closet

(The writer is unable to identify herself publicly without risk to her son’s military career.)

Bakla, wag tanga! KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Read the article below, it should be helpful. If you have better ideas/info/links share it so that we'll know our rights. So that we'll know what we should do in case those pesky arresting officers make epal on our gimik.

But there were some parts that i do not agree on, i know i am guilty of it. Kung talagang may ginagawang kalaswaan dapat na talagang hulihin, straight man yan or gay. So below should be helpful, it would take 5 minutes to read but it could equip you battling, well, illegal arrests. Kakampi mo ang batas.

Know Your Rights

They will not always be ready to come to your rescue or be ready and at hand when you need them.

You have the right to remain silent.

* Yung may record na ng conviction for vagrancy at nahuli muli again and again ay maaring patawan ng parusang arresto mayor hanggang prision correccional  (2 months and 1 day to 1 year,1 month and 10 days) na correctional penalty na kaya ang maximum hours of detention prior to filing a case in court ay 18 hours lamang.

State of the Nation address.

Good Samaritan ignored by New Yorkers, left to die

Saturday

NEW YORK — A homeless Good Samaritan who was ignored while lying, mortally wounded, on a New York City sidewalk will be honored at a wake.

The family of Guatemalan immigrant Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax (TAHL'-eh yaks) is holding services Wednesday at a Brooklyn funeral home.

Police say Tale-Yax was stabbed while helping a woman being attacked. He was found dead on April 18 after lying on a Queens sidewalk for nearly an hour. Some passersby paused and left; others kept walking.

One of his brothers, Byron Tale-Yax, says their actions send a message about humanity.

Police are still looking for the woman Tale-Yax rescued and the man with whom she had fought.

Gay couple were buried alive in horrific French crime

Friday

French police say they still don't know for sure the motive
behind the horrific death of gay couple Guy Bordenave, 39, and Luc Amblard, 56, who suffocated
after being bound and gagged and buried alive.

A gay couple that went missing on March 7, 2009 in the French village of Cher has been found dead nearly three months later, AFP reported. The couple had been buried alive, officials said.

The bodies of Luc Amblard, 56, and Guy Bordenave, 39, who were entertainers living in the small village of Couy, were found on June 4, bound, gagged and buried in a hole about five feet deep, prosecutors say.

The cause of death by suffocation from being buried alive was confirmed by autopsy, said Prosecutor Eric Mathais at a news conference. "We did not find any trace of gunshot, or traces of violence, alcohol or drugs. The victims were dying," said the magistrate.

Two men, between 53 and 37 years, have been detained by police for questioning. One of them knew one of the victims, and the pair was arrested on April 1 last year in the village of Cher. One of two suspects led police to the location of the bodies.

Both defendants were known to police, and have been indicted and jailed for "kidnapping, false imprisonment, followed by death.

Police have not determined whether hatred against one of the two victims was the motive for the horrible crime. The two men face up to life imprisonment.

Facebook Page Calls for the Assassination of President Obama. It has 1,000,000 Fans. Expose the Hate!

A Facebook Fan Page called "DEAR LORD, THIS YEAR YOU TOOK MY FAVORITE ACTOR, PATRICK SWAYZE. YOU TOOK MY FAVORITE ACTRESS, FARAH FAWCETT. YOU TOOK MY FAVORITE SINGER, MICHAEL JACKSON. I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW, MY FAVORITE PRESIDENT IS BARACK OBAMA. AMEN." is allowed to continue to exist on Facebook.

Where as a Facebook Fan Page called: "I bet we can find 1,000,000 people who support the health care law." was recently forced to become a Facebook Group:

Facebook Fan Pages get action in the News Feed and thus can go viral. Groups do not. Which explains why the group petitioning for Facebook to delete the Fan Page calling for the Assassination of President Obama is growing much smaller:

I implore you to please write about this story. To investigate why Facebook allows just a page to continue to go viral. To research if the Secret Service is watching the Page and its creator as a possible domestic terrorist, and to investigate the media's role in inflaming such hate. Freedom of the Press. Please use that freedom for peace and justice.

I AM NOT AN AMERICAN, I DON'T CARE EVEN ABOUT AMERICAN POLITICS. I JUST DONT LIKE TO  LET HATE PREVAIL IN FACEBOOK.

Gay professor found dead after students filmed him having sex

By Staff Writer, PinkNews.co.uk • April 9, 2010 -

A gay professor at a Muslim Indian university has been found dead after his students and a television crew broke into his home and filmed him having sex with a man.

Srinivas Ramchander Siras, professor of modern languages at Aligarh Muslim University, was found dead on Wednesday at his home.

Police believe he may have committed suicide, although the results of a post mortem examination were inconclusive.

He was suspended from his job and asked to leave his college apartment after the sting, in which he was filmed having sex with a rickshaw puller.

The 62-year-old was reinstated after a high court revoked the university's decision.

The Indian Express reported it had spoken to Siras on Monday evening after the suspension was lifted.

"I want to go to America, I want to teach them Marathi. Not the literature, the language. America is the only place where I will be free to be gay,” he was quoted as saying.

Gay rights campaigners have accused the university of driving him to his death.

Last year, the Delhi high court ruled that gay sex could not longer be criminalised.

Prince Manvendra Singh, India's first openly gay royal, accused those who filmed Siras of killing him.

According to the Daily Telegraph, he said: "I would rate this as a murder. These people need to be taken to task. What right did they have to attack his privacy? It was private, consensual sex and these students and television people got him to commit suicide." (SOURCE:www.pinknews.co.uk)

Tuesday
4/5/10-by Melanie Nathan and Paula Brooks

This is the face of South African lesbian who was beaten and raped for five hours by a man who told her he wanted to “turn her into a woman”.

According to the Cape Argus, Millicent Gaika of Gugulethu Township alleged her attacker “acted like an animal who wanted to kill” and said “I thought he was going to kill me; he was like an animal. And he kept saying: ‘I know you are a lesbian. You are not a man, you think you are, but I am going to show you, you are a woman. I am going to make you pregnant. I am going to kill you.’”

Gay Zimbabweans Face Corrective Rape

Monday

By Julie Bolcer, www,advocate.com

Some gay men and lesbians in Zimbabwe have been raped and forced into heterosexual marriages by people who seek to “convert” them from homosexuality, said an official from the U.S. State Department during a discussion about the agency’s annual human rights report.

According to the Associated Press, “Gay men were forced into heterosexual acts and lesbian women were raped, sometimes by male relatives, to teach them to change their ways, said Amanda Porter, political officer at the U.S. Embassy in Harare and compiler of the report.”

“Hate speech by politicians against the nation's small gay community fueled social pressures on families, Porter said,” according to the AP. “And crimes against human rights and sexual abuse against gays were rarely reported to police.”

President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai both have expressed personal abhorrence of gay people. Mugabe said gay rights would not be protected in a new Zimbabwe constitution, but Tsvangirai called for tolerance, the AP reports.

Gays shouldn’t be given funerals, argues Italian bishop

Saturday
news.PinkPaper.com, Saturday, 10 April 2010

The bishop of the city of Tursi has declared homosexuals should not receive communion or be given funerals.

In an interview published last Friday on pontifex.roma.it, a website created to ‘prove and defend Christianity’, Bishop Francesco Nolè declared that ‘irregulars’ such as criminals and homosexuals should not be given communions or funerals. This, he said, is not to be seen as discrimination, but rather as ‘healthy medicine’ for those close to the person: “Our behaviour, which could be perceived as mean or cruel, in the long-run often heals and evangelises.”

He added: “We must have the courage and tact, perhaps first informing the individual, or the families if he has passed, that it’s not possible to administer a communion or funeral. We would perhaps pray for his soul, which must be done.”

His statements were made just days after two members of the Vatican were exposed as being part of a male prostitution ring.

Also speaking out in disdain of homosexuality, Master of the Sistine Chapel choir Clergyman Domenico Bartolucci has blamed the recent scandal on the church’s lack of discipline. Speaking to the editor of pontifex.rome.it Bartolucci said the people in charge should have been more careful “before accepting such a subject into a choir.”

He went on to say: “The church, with its eternal obsession with compassion, is or has already succumbed. Homosexual couples or those who are divorced and re-married are being called ‘irregulars’ instead of ‘public sinners’, and so the concept of sin itself goes down the drain.

“Nothing surprises me anymore. Homosexuality, which is a disease, has become something normal. They sprout like poisonous mushrooms, and instead of feeling shame they celebrate this plague and the church itself minimalises these sins. Homosexuality itself is not a sin, you can’t punish a sufferer. But it becomes one when the abomination is practised. It’s disgraceful.”

Since the initiative of MCCQC, SGO-Phils, OUTPhils, GABAY, IFTAS and other concerned LGBT individuals and formations last September 2009 we only have accounted a few cases (past cases were researched from news archives): Documenting these cases would provide our legislators ammunition to pass the Anti-Discrimination Bill pending in congress as well as lobbying for an Anti-Hate Crime Bill.

We make this call again to everyone: If you have heard or known of a murder or homicide case or any incident of violence which the LGBT community is targeted please send us the following information at the MCCQC e-mail metropolitancommunitychurchqc@gmail.com or IFTAS mtlacsamana@gmail.com. If you are a member of any of the participating organizations mentioned in this letter, contact your community leaders:

1. Name of the Victim
2. Age of the Victim
3. Profession of the Victim
4. Date of Crime
5. Circumstances how they were killed and how they were found
