DECEMBER 1 IS WORLD AIDS DAY: "Act Aware"

Tuesday

The World Aids day is celebrated on 1st December every year. It is dedicated to elevate the awareness of AIDS pandemic sources by spreading of HIV infectivity. It is ordinary to hold remembrance to respect persons who have expired from HIV/AIDS on this day. Health officials and Govt detect the event, often with forums or speeches on AIDS theme. Since 1995, the President of United States has created an official announcement on the World AIDS Day. Govt of other states have made similar announcement on this day.

This disease has killed above 25 million people between 1981 and 2007. About 33.2 million people universal live with HIV/AIDS as of 2007. It has become the most critical epidemic in the recorded history.

World Aids Day History

The World AIDS Day was primary conceived in August 1987 by Thomas Netter and James W. Bunn, both are information officers for Global Program on AIDS at World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. Netter and Bunn took their scheme to Dr. Jonathan Mann, Director of Global Program on AIDS (known as UNAIDS). Dr. Mann liked the idea, permitted it, and consent with the proposal that the initial ceremony of the World AIDS Day ought to be 1st December, 1988.

Bunn recommended the date of 1st December to make sure reporting through western news media. He felt that since 1988 was a voting year in U.S. media passage would be tired of their post-election reporting and excited to get fresh news to cover. Netter and Bunn felt that 1st December was adequate after voting and early enough prior to Christmas holidays, in fact, it was a dead spot in news calendar and consequently perfect timing for the World AIDS Day.

James W. Bunn along with creator Nancy Saslow initiated and conceived “AIDS Lifeline” – a health education campaign and public awareness that was organized to television stations in U.S. "AIDS Lifeline" was privileged with a Peabody Award, a local Emmy, and the foremost National Emmy honored to local station in U.S.

On 18th June, 1986 the “AIDS Lifeline” plan was awarded with Presidential reference for the Private Sector Initiatives, which is presented via President Ronald Reagan. Then Bunn was asked through Dr. Mann, for U.S. Govt, to take two-year leave-of-absence from his coverage duties to link Dr. Mann (an epidemiologist for the Centers for Disease Control) and support in the formation of Global Program on AIDS. Bunn accepted it and was also named the primary Public Information Officer for Global Program on AIDS. With Netter he implemented, created and designed the opening World AIDS Day ceremony – currently the longest-running disease prevention and awareness program of its type in the account of public health)

The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) became equipped in 1996, it captured the preparation and endorsement of the World AIDS Day. Before focus on single day UNAIDS made World AIDS crusade in 1997 to focus on constant communications education and prevention.

In its initial two years, the idea of the World AIDS Day focused on young people and children. These ideas were strongly condemned at the time for disregarded the fact that natives of all ages might become infected with HIV diseases and endure from AIDS. However the thoughts drew concentration to HIV/AIDS endemic helped the persons those who were suffered from HIV/AIDS.

Picking the World Aids Day Theme

In the year of 2004, World AIDS crusade became a sovereign organization. From its beginning until 2004, UNAIDS organized the World AIDS Day operation, selecting annual topics in discussion with other worldwide health associations.

As of 2008, every year’s World AIDS Day idea is chosen through the World AIDS Campaign's universal Steering Committee following extensive discussion with organizations, people, and Govt agencies occupied in the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS.

For all World AIDS Day from 2005 through 2010, the subject will be "Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise” with an annual sub-theme. This overarching topic is intended to persuade supporting leaders to keep their pledge to achieve worldwide access to HIV/AIDS treatment, prevention, support and care by the year 2010.

And this topic is not precise to the World AIDS Day, but it is used year-round in WAC's attempts to show up HIV/AIDS alertness within the background of other main global events comprising the G8 Summit. The world AIDS Campaign conducts "in-country" campaigns all through the world, like Student Stop AIDS Campaign, an infection-alertness operation targeting youth people throughout UK.
